Children's Eye Exams in North York

Children do not always realize when their vision is different from everyone else’s. A comprehensive eye exam can help us understand how your child sees, focuses, tracks, and uses both eyes together—while also checking overall eye health.
At Optima Eye Care, we make children’s eye exams feel relaxed and approachable. We explain each step in age-appropriate language, give children time to respond, and welcome parents or caregivers to be part of the visit.
What does a children’s eye exam include?
Every exam is tailored to your child’s age, development, and needs. Depending on the visit, we may assess visual clarity, refractive error, eye alignment, focusing, eye movement, depth perception, colour vision, and eye health. We will also talk with you about your child’s schoolwork, reading habits, screen use, sports, and any concerns you have noticed at home.
If glasses or another next step is recommended, we will explain why in clear, practical terms and help you understand the options.
Signs it may be time to book
An eye exam is a good idea if your child squints, sits very close to screens, holds books close, rubs their eyes often, loses their place while reading, complains of headaches, avoids detailed near work, or seems to struggle with seeing the board at school.
Not every vision concern is obvious. A child may adapt to blur or eye strain without mentioning it, which is why routine comprehensive eye exams are valuable even when there are no clear symptoms.
More than a school vision screening
School vision screenings can be a helpful first check, but they do not replace a comprehensive eye exam. A full exam lets us look beyond a distance-vision chart and assess the visual skills and eye health that support everyday learning and activities.
If your child did not pass a screening—or if you have concerns despite a passed screening—book an exam so we can take a closer look.
A positive experience for children and parents
We know a new clinic and unfamiliar equipment can feel intimidating. Our team keeps the visit friendly, patient, and encouraging. You are welcome to share anything that may help your child feel at ease, from their interests to any previous eye-care experiences.
Bring your child’s current glasses, any past prescriptions, and notes from a teacher or school screening if you have them. We will make sure you leave with a clear understanding of the findings and recommended next steps.
